Should You Pick Pikmin for Wii?
When Nintendo released the Gamecube, in 2001, I really wanted one. I didn’t get one until a couple years later, though. When I did, Pikmin looked so unusual that I had to try it. I soon fell in love with it and Pikmin 2.
When the Wii came out I was excited about the prospect of a third Pikmin game on Wii, so I bought a Wii. While there were a lot of other titles I loved released, Pikmin 3 wasn’t one of them. So, now that Pikmin for Wii is actually going to happen, I may just have to finally get another Wii, since my ex-boyfriend kept mine.
For those who aren’t familiar with Pikmin, it’s a cartoon-like collect stuff game. The closest things I could equate it to would be Spyro the Dragon or Banjo Kazooie. It came from an idea of Shigeru Miyamoto’s, who is, of course, a legend in the Nintendo world.
The first Pikmin game focused on Captain Olimar, a space pilot who crash lands on a strange planet. When he crashes, parts of his space ship wind up all over the planet. He has 30 days to find them all. Along the way, he discovers strange creatures, called Pikmin.
The Pikmin look sort of like carrots, except that they have eyes and, in some cases, ears and they come in various colors. Captain Olimar befriends the Pikmin and they help him to collect his ship pieces. Red Pikmin are fire Pikmin, blue Pikmin can go in the water and yellow Pikmin can handle anything electrical and jump fairly high.
In Pikmin 2, Olimar returns to his planet and finds that his job is in jeopardy because Hocotate Industries may be going bankrupt. Out of his space ship pops a piece of trash from the planet he’d been at (I believe it was a bottle cap, but it’s been a while since I played). Olimar’s boss suddenly becomes excited and says that the trash could be valuable.
So, with his co-worker, Louie, in tow, Olimar sets off again to collect as much of the “treasure” as possible and bring it back. The treasure consists of everything from berries to bottle caps to Blistex bottles. It’s fun to see all the different product plugs and also the funny names that they are called in the game. For example, you’ll find a cherry that’s called “Cupid’s Grenade” or a tube of paint called “Decorative Goo”.
Actually, it sounds like there are going to be three separate Pikmin releases for Wii. The first two games for Cube are being adapted for Wii and then they’re planning to release a totally new game, Pikmin 3. I’m excited about all of the above! It should be great to be able to play Pikmin using Wii maneuverability!
Unfortunately, the people at Nintendo are being very secretive about Pikmin 3, but it’s supposedly going to be released sometime in 2009 and, hopefully, it’ll be similar to the first two. I really enjoyed them and can’t wait for the next Pikmin game! In fact, I’m almost glad they’re being secretive. Hopefully it’ll be a pleasant surprise when Pikmin 3 is released. Although, it might be hard to top the first two.
