There are several different types of Motorcycles. Three main categories of motorcycles are street, off-road, and dual purpose. Street motorcycles are designed for operation on roads. There are several subcategories of motorcycles in the street category that can be defined based on riding posture. Standard riding posture is when a rider sits upright with the knees lower than the hips. Sport ridding posture is when a rider leans forward to lower wind resistance. Bikes with a sports posture design are intended for high-speed situations that may require quick turning and are not designed for comfort. Cruiser posture is when a rider leans back with their legs extended straight outward. Cruiser posture is the most comfortable posture, but results in lower visibility.
Off-road motorcycles are also known as dirt bikes. Dirt bikes have stronger suspensions, dirt guards, and tires specifically made for off-road conditions. This type of motorcycle does not have lights and turn signals required for road operation. Dirt bikes are used for recreation and also for racing. Dirt bikes are built with a standard riding posture, and have little to no cosmetic features. Dirt bikes are simply designed for optimal utility and durability. Dirt bike racing involving jumps is called Motorcross. Rally races are long distance dirt bike races. Trials is a type of short distance dirt bike competition involving the running of an obstacle course. Track racing involves running around a flat oval track on a stripped down version of a dirt bike lacking brakes and suspension with at most two gears. Dirt bikes require a different type of fuel blend than street bikes and different kinds of Motorcycle Services.
Dual sport motorcycles are a hybrid in between a street bike and a dirt bike. These bikes have the rigid construction of a dirt bike and headlights, turn signals, and mirrors to make them street legal. Dual sport motorcycles are usually meant for long distance travel and have larger gas tanks.
